**Pitta** - is the combination of the elements (see Five Elements) of Water (Jwala in Sanskrit and Fire (Agni). Ayurveda considers this one of the three main bodily humors (Dosha), the other two being Vata and Kapha. Pitta is often associated in the human body with digestive fire or metabolism of both food and knowledge (Agni) and energy (Tejas).

The subtypes of Pitta are Pachaka Pitta, Ranjaka Pitta, Sadhaka Pitta, Alochaka Pitta, and Bhrajaka Pitta.

The qualities or attributes (guna) of Pitta are:

• Hot - Ushna
• Sharp - Tikshna
• Light - Laghu
• Fetid-Fleshy-Fishy-Funky-Fermented-Strong Odor - Visram
• Liquid - Drava
• Spreading - Sara
• Oily - Snigdha

Modern terms associated with Pitta qualities are: Hot-headed, Boiling mad, Seeing red, Heartburn, Hot blooded, Burns me up, Hot under the collar, Burning or smoldering eyes, etc.
